How to prepare for the Maltese A2 test in six weeks

Facts checked against the official sources on 21 October 2026. Independent guide, not affiliated with the Government of Malta.

The plan in one paragraph

Six weeks, ten minutes a day, one mock test a week. Weeks one and two: vocabulary and the article, gender and plurals. Weeks three and four: verbs, reading texts and listening dialogues. Week five: writing tasks and the three oral prompts. Week six: a mock test every second day and your weak spots only. People who do this pass. People who read a grammar book for two months do not.

Weeks 1 and 2: words and the basics

Ten words a day from the everyday topics: greetings, food, shopping, home, work, health, transport, time, family, the town. Say the example sentence out loud every time; the oral exam is won here. One grammar lesson a day: the article il- and the sun letters, masculine and feminine, plurals, the verb to have. Five questions after each lesson, instant feedback, move on.

Weeks 3 and 4: verbs, reading, listening

The present and past of the common verbs, negatives with ma and x, the numbers. Read one short text a day the way the exam asks: once for the gist, once for the details, then answer the questions. Play one dialogue twice before you open the transcript. Microsoft Edge on Windows has a Maltese voice built in; on a phone, read the transcript aloud, it still trains the ear.

Week 5: writing and the oral exam

Write the short messages the exam asks for: a note to the landlord, a form, a message to a colleague. Fifty words is enough. Compare with a model answer and tick a checklist: greeting, the point, a date or a number, a closing line. Then the oral exam, out loud, in front of a mirror or a patient friend: introduce yourself, describe a picture, answer questions. The model answers exist so you can copy their shape, not their words.

Week 6: mock tests and weak spots

A mock test every second day, on the clock, marked with the 65% pass mark. After each one, go through every mistake and the reason. Your weak spots list is the only thing you study in the last three days. Sleep the night before. Set your exam date in the app and let the countdown do the nagging.
